New Harpoon Summer Beer

Boston-based Harpoon Brewery has released a new summer seasonal—UFO Big Squeeze Shandy. The latest entry in the brewer’s unfiltered UFO series, Big Squeeze Shandy is an unfiltered wheat beer blended with grapefruit juice. The 4.5%-abv offering, which is characterized by sweet malt, tart and citrus notes, will be available throughout the summer season in bottled six-packs and 12-packs, cans and on draft, priced at around $7.99 a six-pack. UFO Big Squeeze Shandy joins UFO Pale Ale, UFO Pumpkin, UFO Hefeweizen, UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen and UFO White in Harpoon’s unfiltered lineup. In addition to its Boston headquarters, Harpoon Brewery operates a second production facility in Windsor, Vermont.

Jim Nantz Tap New Winemaker To Take “The Calling” To Next Level

The Calling, a joint venture between Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits CEO Peter Deutsch and CBS Sports commentator Jim Nantz, has appointed Dan Goldfield as consulting winemaker on its high-end Sonoma County wine brand. Taking over for Marco DiGiulio, Goldfield began blending for the 2013 vintage and will have full winemaking responsibility for the 2014 vintage.

Goldfield is known for his nearly 20-year partnership with fifth-generation winegrower Steve Dutton on the well-regarded Dutton-Goldfield brand and has extensive knowledge of the Dutton Ranch vineyard, which is the primary source of The Calling’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The current portfolio from The Calling includes Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay ($32), Dutton Ranch Jewell Vineyard Chardonnay ($51), Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($37), Russian River Valley Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir, ($62), Alexander Valley Rio Lago Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($37) and an Alexander Valley Bordeaux-style blend “Our Tribute” ($62).

Launched in 2012, The Calling grew 77% in the past year as it expanded its presence both on- and off-premise. In 2013, the brand reached 12,000 case depletions, and Deutsch and Nantz expect it to advance to 18,000-20,000 cases this year.
