Mass. SJC Allows Beer, Wine Sale Ballot Question to Move Forward
The question would let local authorities issue licenses allowing food stores to sell beer and wine and be in addition to existing licenses issued for the sale of alcoholic beverages
Supporters of a ballot question that would let convenience stores and other food stores sell beer and wine won a key legal battle in Massachusetts’s highest court
The new licenses could be issued as soon as December if the question is approved. There would also be no limits on the number of licenses any one company could control after a phase-in period.
If approved by voters in 2020, would “do great harm to public safety and the alcohol beverages industry of Massachusetts.”
It would also reform the age verification process for buying alcohol, and impose requirements on the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission to maintain a certain number of inspectors.
