Is English Pinot Noir really getting better?

It’s the second most planted variety in the country, with 323ha as of 2016, accounting for almost one quarter of total plantings (as a comparison Pinot is 38% of plantings in Champagne). But in a country where sparkling accounts for 70% of all wines, and reds and even rosés make up just 10% of bottles, it’s a rare winemaker who chooses to hold back on their precious Pinot grapes and then run the risk of them not ripening sufficiently for still wines.

Exploring Chateau Ste Michelle Winery

Chateau Ste. Michelle is celebrating 50 years of wine making in 2017!

As one of the founding winery’s in WA State they are the premier winery from WA State and have helped define the Northwest wine industry with classic vinefera wines that stand out today as they did 50 years ago.  With a long history of accolades they produce wines that you will enjoy today and with great aging potential.  We will focus on some of their single vineyard wines and their reserve Indian Wells tier.

Helping us taste through these wines is John Gedgaudas, a Business Development Manager for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates.  John has been selling and representing wine for over 10 years and is excited to present them.  Focusing on WA State will be fun as it is an area of consistent weather conditions that provide great quality grapes  vintage after vintage.  Maybe WA State will become your new favorite wine region.

SPECIAL OFFER!

In the past we have worked with the wine app Quini ( www.quiniwine.com )

During this event rate the wines and get $1 off for every review you enter.

We will taste 7 wines you can get up to $7 off!!

Thursday, September 21     Noble Grape Varieties

A great introduction to the basics of wine grapes and the six varieties that produce most of the wines that consumers are familiar with. We’ll discuss what makes these grapes so special, where you’ll see them grown, and which famous wines you’ll find them in. And of course we’ll taste all six!

Tuesday, October 17                        Decoding American Wine Labels

Many people buy wines based on label only. Do you? In this valuable class we’ll explain all the truths and lies on an American wine label. Knowing this information will help you get more value for your money, understand how to figure out if a wine is a generic commercial wine or a hand-made artisanal bottling, and clues to what it’s going to taste like. After this event buying wine will never be the same!

Thursday, December 7                     Decoding European Wine Labels

OK, so you understand an American wine label, but European labelling follows an entirely different set of rules, and can be confusing and intimidating. We’ll walk you through the method behind French, Italian, Spanish, and German labels, and help you understand what they’re telling you. You’ll leave with the confidence to buy that bottle of Bordeaux or Spatlese!

Is Vermont becoming the Napa Valley of beer?

This area has always held a nostalgic place in my heart that’s groovy, natural and true. But standing in line at the Alchemist, I worry that Vermont may be transforming into some kind of touristy, theme-park “Napa Valley of beer.”

Drawing the Natural Wine Battle Lines

After two pieces focusing on organics and biodynamics in the vineyard, we conclude this series by focusing more on the natural wine movement, which, in a way, is just asking for trouble.

One crucial caveat is that products under the natural wine banner are not guaranteed to be free of sulfite additions. These are kept to low levels, perhaps under 30mg/liter for reds and 40mg/liter for white wines, but this figure varies among different charters, and may exceed requirements for certification as organic wine under USDA regulations. Sulfur usage remains an area of debate within the natural movement itself.

Wine Freedom for Massachusetts

If H3891 becomes law Bay Staters will finally have access to all the wines in the American wine marketplace. Massachusetts law currently bans residents from receiving wine shipments from out-of-state wine stores and retailers. Inexplicably, it also bans it’s own wine stores from shipping wine out-of-state. H3891 would solve both those problems.

TRACES OF 6,000-YEAR-OLD WINE COULD REWRITE ITALY’S WINEMAKING HISTORY

Traditionally, it’s been believed that wine growing and wine production developed in Italy in the Middle Bronze Age (1300-1100 B.C.), as indicated by the discovery of as seeds, ancient storage pots and the remnants of wineries.

However this latest discovery positions the start of Italy’s winemaking heritage even further back in history, indicating that the ability to make wine was acquired in at least 4,000BC – the Copper Age.

Is it finally time for organic wine?

Organic wine is vino produced by viticulturists and winemakers who eschew the use of artificial and synthetic chemicals, such as fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides in their vineyards. They are also highly selective about what they add to wine during the fermentation and winemaking process, using only a limited number of natural substances.

Wine buying report

Did You Know?

62% of Millennial wine buyers have no brand in mind when they walk into a store?

AND

90% of all the wines sold in MOST stores are owned by a handful of corporate brands?

We feel the best way to shop for wine is to be open to exploration.

There is a big difference in supporting a “brand” to supporting a winery.

Things to think about when you are looking to buy:

Is It For guests?

A Gift idea?

Pairing With Food?

Your Budget

Your Wine Profile Match

At Franklin Liquors we would love to help you with your selections. Let us match your profile as we always taste and explore.

Generic shelf talkers and stores that support national brands can’t do that.
