Catena Branches Into Natural Wine

Argentinian winery Bodega y Viñedos Catena is launching La Marchigiana, a trio of natural wines that pays homage to the Catena family’s winemaking roots in 19th-century Italy. Baker’s Bourbon

Beam Suntory has revamped Baker’s Bourbon, keeping its seven-year age minimum and proof, but switching the whiskey to a single barrel bottling. A friend told me that preservatives are injected into wine corks through the foil capsule or plastic sleeve, as indicated by the small holes in the seal. This seems unlikely to me. Is it true?

Those tiny holes in the capsule sure cause a lot of confusion! No, they are not a sign of something injected into the bottle, nor are they there to let the cork breathe.

Rather, those tiny perforations act as a vent to allow air to escape when the capsule is being put on the bottle. They allow for a tighter, wrinkle-free fit without any air trapped in the capsule.

ARE FARMHOUSE ALES ACTUALLY MADE ON FARMS?

Not anymore, but they used to be.

Farmhouse ales used to exist out of necessity. For centuries, drinking beer was safer than drinking water. European farmers needed a beverage that was low enough in alcohol so they could still accomplish their daily tasks, while also gaining a bit of sustenance; thus, the farmhouse ale was born. These beers are traditionally made with ingredients found on the farm and can be a bit funky and smell like straw or hay. Farmers would usually brew these beers in the winter and then drink them through the entire growing season up until the point of harvest.

Farmhouse ales were all but dead until the craft beer industry revived them. You’ll most often see them on brewers tap lists around harvest time. It’s unlikely now that your average farmhouse ale was actually made on a farm, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious.

New Jack

Jack Daniel’s is introducing Tennessee Apple, a blend of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and apple liqueur. Launched this month, Tennessee Apple is at 35% abv and is in national distribution in 50-ml., 375-ml., 750-ml., and 1-liter bottles, retailing for $27 a 750-ml. It joins Tennessee Honey and Tennessee Fire in the Jack Daniel’s flavor portfolio. Tennessee Honey and Fire combined for over 1.1 million cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.
