Sulfites In Wine

Lets talk sulfites!

“Contains Sulfites” is one of the truths on a wine label.

If you see it the wine has over 10ppm sulfite in it.

( 1PPM=1 milligram per liter (34oz) )

If you see the USDA seal there are less than 10ppm and no “added sulfites”

Organic grapes used will say contains sulfites but have less than 100ppm

There is NO evidence that sulfites cause headaches. Also keep in mind that sulfites are the only additive that the government requires to be listed. Than can be over 60 other additives that are not regulated. Those are what you should be worried about.

Why You Shouldn’t Worry About Sulfites in Wine

There are plenty aspects of wine and winemaking that are misunderstood, but few as publicly or brutally as sulfites.

http://www.bonappetit.com/drinks/wine/article/sulfite-free-wine

Reality

The average wine has about 80ppm and no wine by law can contain more that 350ppm. Here is a comparision of other items with sulfites

UNEXPECTED PLEASURES: RUCHÈ FROM PIEDMONT, ITALY

Ruchè (pronounced /ru kei/ roo-kay in English), is a lesser-known, dark-skinned red wine grape primarily grown in Piedmont, Italy. The origin of the Ruchè grape is still uncertain. One theory claims that Ruchè is indigenous to the town of Asti. Some say it has Burgundian roots. Ruchè has been grown in the area for more than one hundred years but it was not until the late 20th century that Ruchè wine has been marketed and consumed outside of Italy.

Unearthing California’s Pre-Prohibition Wine Roots

From the time of California’s first wine harvest around 1782 to the passage of the Volstead Act in 1920, the state has had a twisted and complex winemaking history filled booms and busts. But if you hunt around you can still find traces of the area’s pre-Prohibition roots. These historic sites and wineries offer a glimpse of those earlier times.

Update On Craft Beer Seal

  • Less than a month since its launch, the Brewers Association’s Independent Craft seal has been adopted by over 1,250 brewing companies. The seal, an upturned beer bottle with “Independent Craft” in bold type, signifies that the product is made by a Brewers Association-certified, independently owned craft brewer. The seal is intended to allow consumers to differentiate between independent brewers and companies that have recently been acquired by macrobrewers. According to the BA, the brewers who have signed on to use the seal represent roughly 50% of the craft beer market by volume.

What Wine Would We Recommend To The Pope?

The Pope released technical specifications for wines to be used during mass:

Must be “natural” BUT sulfites are ok.

Alcohol level must be under 20%

Can be Red, White or Rosė

Grapes cant be harvested in the rain

So what would we sell if you wanted to drink what the Pope recommends?

Well just about all wines will work.

So please drink, as the Catholic Church requires.

Related Stories:

Pope orders ‘natural’ wine for Holy Communion
‘The wine that is used in the most sacred celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice must be natural, from the fruit of the grape, pure and incorrupt, not mixed with other substances.

‘Great care should be taken so that the wine intended for the celebration of the Eucharist is well conserved and has not soured.’

Officials added, ‘It is altogether forbidden to use wine of doubtful authenticity or provenance.’

VATICAN BANS GLUTEN FREE COMMUNION WINE

There are two stages during the wine making process where gluten may be introduced.

The first is the practice of using a flour paste to seal oak barrels. The second is the practice of fining, which is done to clarify wine. Gluten can be used to fine wine, but more often a different agent like egg white, gelatin or isinglass is used, making it non-vegan.

Into the Weeds with Wine

Moe Momtazi and family have cultivated 480 acres of prime Yamhill County hillsides, growing their award-winning grapes and making Maysara wines (a Persian term meaning “house of wine”).

Adjacent to Momtazi’s property, their neighbor, Richard Wagner, planned to grow cannabis. But Momtazi worried that the cannabis might taint his wines with the “skunky” aromas and flavors of the pot; he sued and brought the case before the three Yamhill County Board of Commissioners, even though Wagner had not yet planted a single pot vine.

The magic of making bubbly

Champagne is all about fun. We love those cascading bubbles, that vivacious zing and the laughs that follow. It symbolizes celebration. But for a winemaker, champagne and other “methode champenoise” sparkling wines present winemaking’s greatest challenge.

This is What Sustainable Wine Certification in California Really Means

Some Sonoma wine growers aren’t happy that an organization tells them how to do business and grow. But the bigger issue is that Sonoma’s sustainable certification process doesn’t ban synthetic herbicides. It allows growers to use Monsanto’s Roundup, which contains glyphosate. Many kitchen gardeners, a lot of the general public, and sustainable and organic farmers and winegrowers take issue with Roundup. Their concern is for good reason.

ME Regulators To Take Up Ban On Sale Of Miniature Liquor Bottles

The prolonged debate over the merits of a five-cent deposit on 50-milliter liquor bottles officially ended last month, when lawmakers rallied to override the governor’s veto of the proposal. But now the governor wants the Maine Liquor and Lottery Commission to ban the sales of nips in the state to reduce not only incidents of littering, but also drunken driving.

What’s up with organic wines?

By any measure, wine made with organic grapes and wine labelled as organic – two completely different products under US law – are a small part of the US market. Even allowing for price, Nielsen figures say they’re only 2.7% of the market between $10.00 and $15.00, and 5.4% between $15.00 and $25.00, while their growth has slowed and was only one-third of that of similarly priced conventional wines over the past year.

To remove the crown from the bottle, consumers simply hold the bottle in one hand, place their thumb under the lever and push the lever upward. Nothing else is need. Exploring Minerality

Funny how things happen. Until the 1990s, the term minerality didn’t appear in the most acclaimed guides, not even the Oxford Companion to Wine. For wine lovers all over the world, flavors were basically fruity, floral, spicy, herbal…

Then, suddenly, this new word – minerality – emerged to become the trendiest descriptor in the wine lover’s lexicon. Googling it produces more than a million results. The term itself is relatively new: according to a study examining the word’s evolution in French literature, associations between minéralité (minerality) and vin (wine) have increased since 1985. Yet, despite this recent explosion of popularity, a unique definition has not been created.

The Ongoing Attempt to Kill America’s Greatest Wine Retailers

If the smaller, specialty wine retailers across the country are to survive in this contracting retail environment and the consumer’s ongoing migration to online purchases, they must be able to offer their uniquely curated inventory to the smaller but significant cadre of wine lovers looking online for something unique, rare and authentic.

Yet the forces of regulatory inertia, lawmakers’ slavish devotion to the deep pockets of wine wholesalers who oppose retailer wine shipping, and a reactionary fear of change by most small retailers all stand in the way of giving America’s traditional specialty wine retailers their chance at survival.

Beer, Wine or Liquor? Data Shows More People Are Turning to the Hard Stuff

The country drank 3.5 million fewer nine-liter cases of alcohol overall in 2016 than it did the year before, with total consumption down to about 3.39 billion cases last year, according to the annual IWSR US Beverage Alcohol Review. But the volume of wine and liquor bought both increased, especially for whisky, tequila and cognac.

The terms “independent” and “independently-owned” are relatively straightforward in their meaning; however, the survey had an even more interesting finding: These terms also ranked second-highest among words drinkers said would be “more likely” to influence their purchases. CraftRoots Brewing is grounded in a genuine grassroots idea: focus craft beer back to its field-to-glass origins.  We brew fresh and flavorful home-grown ales that connect you to local farmers and craft maltsters.

Gain the confidence to taste, sell, and speak meaningfully about all aspects of French wine, from Champagne to Bordeaux and everything in between. Pass the exam and earn the title French Wine Scholar and FWS post-nominal.

Developed by the Wine Scholar Guild with the support of the French Ministry of Agriculture, this specialization program is designed for advanced students of wine, whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists. This is NOT an introductory wine class; students should have professional wine experience or previous classroom study. Students must be familiar with the concepts of viticulture and vinification, major grape varieties, wine regions, and wine styles from across the globe, and have experience tasting wine in a formal setting.
